Thus
saith the Lord, The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool;
where is the house that ye build unto me? And where is the place
of my rest?
Isaiah 66:1
True
holiness is not something that can be obtained by “good works”.
In fact, we as believers have no hope of ever being holy without
the help of our Creator. God is looking for a temple that He can
rest in (not just visit) – someone who will permit Him to
create a sanctuary in his or her heart. We will not walk into the
promises of finances, marriage, etc. Until we find ourselves holy
before God. We are commissioned to go out into the world in order
to spread the gospel. Yet, we are unable to assist others in being
holy without being holy ourselves.
And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that
in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.
Genesis 2:3
“Well,
what is the Sabbath rest?” one may ask. Before God rested
on the Sabbath, there was nothing special about that day: for rest
isn’t in Sabbath, it is in God. Rest is a quality of God’s
wholeness, and in order to make us whole, God hasto have a place
where He can rest in us. The Sabbath is made holy when God shows
up, so it is not the day that is key, it is when God shows up and
makes it holy. Therefore, the Sabbath really is not referring to
our ability to keep it holy- we are keeping the Sabbath (for us
Sunday) holy. It refers to our willingness (or unwillingness) to
enter into God’s rest.
We
become holy when God rests upon us. But we must first put away the
sins of our flesh. Holiness starts in our homes when we are by ourselves.
We have to get to the place where we can cry out, “Lord, I
need to get myself together because I am not where I am supposed
to be. I need you allow me to rest…” God’s loving
reply is, “ I’ve been waiting on you to come because
I want to share My heart. There’s something about me that
you need to know that will strengthen you a little further. Until
you become holy, the things I’ve place in you (great things)
won’t prosper.”
We
have to make sure that envy, strife, hatred, etc. are all out of
us. We will never go higher with envy/strife in our heart against
others. God is ready to rest and take a seat in you. He wants you
to follow His will and follow His plan. If you continue in your
current state, you will not make it to your destiny. In order for
God to rest, you have to recognize that you need Him in your spirit.
We
must get to the place where we stop fooing people with a form of
godliness which denys the real power of God. No one likes a dirty
house, so why offer God a dirty house? God wants to come into place
where there is accountability, discipline, consistency, diligence,
responsibility, and balance where He can have full control.
He
wants dominion over ever aspect of your life. We need the Lord to
come and rest in us because like the Sabbath, we will never become
holy until God rests in us. He wants to be the One we totally depend
on. We must realize that we will never have the things we desire
in life (wealth, home, marriage) until God rests in us. Although
we may obtain it, it will not fulfill the emptiness within us (only
God can do that). We must stop looking for people to fulfill us
and make us feel like we are somebody. That starts when we allow
God to be God, and we start looking within ourselves, finding out
the treasure that is within us.
Learn
to allow God to be first. If we listen, we would hear His longing
cry, “I need someone who will allow Me to come in and take
out everything that is not like me, everything keeping them from
the place I want to take them.” Our response would then be,
“Lord take it out.” For if we truly take a good look,
we realize that we really do not need God to pinpoint the areas
in which we need cleansing – we already know. This is a time
in life where we need to be really with ourselves. Do not get so
comfortable because you have been saved so long, that you feel you
do not have an area in your life that you need to work on. You have
to wake up, you cannot continue to walk in sin. There is a cry for
us to be holy—it is going to be holiness or hell.
